Mobile Internet FAQ

What is the 'Mobile Internet' service?

Qtel's Mobile Internet service allows Post Paid and Hala customers to access the Internet and WAP sites over their mobile handset. To access web and WAP sites, all a customer has to do is (a) click on the WEB icon in their handset menu and (b) type in the url address of the web / WAP site they wish to navigate to.

Do I need to subscribe to access 'Mobile Internet'?

No. Qtel's 'Mobile Internet' Service gives you easy access to the Internet with no monthly subscription or connection fees.

Is Mobile Internet available for Hala customers?

Yes. Mobile Internet service is available for both Postpaid and Hala customers.

How do I obtain 'Mobile Internet' access?

Firstly, you need a WAP/WEB enabled handset (GPRS or 3G handset). Secondly, you need to install Qtel's internet access network settings on your mobile handset (please refer to the below question for further detail on how you can obtain the appropriate handset setting)

How can I obtain the required setting for Mobile Internet service?

You may already have the required handset setting. Qtel now has the ability to detect which handsets are, and are not configured and as a result, push the appropriate settings to customer handsets by way of an SMS message with an invitation to 'save' the settings to their handset. If you do not recall ever receiving such a message or otherwise are unsure, you can easily check whether you are already set up for Mobile Internet access. Simply try and access the internet by clicking on the WEB icon in your handset menu. If you are unable to access, you can manually request the handset setting for your specific handset by sending an SMS text message containing the word "all" to the number 2072. Alternatively, please dial 111 from your mobile to obtain further assistance.

How much does 'Mobile Internet' cost?

It depends on how the customer uses the service. Qtel does not charge a connection or monthly subscription fee for its 'Mobile Internet' service but it does charge for service usage. Each WAP or web page that a customer browses or content item that they download or send involves data traffic being sent over Qtel's wireless network. Charging for the Mobile Internet service is based on the volume of data consumed or downloaded at the rate of 1 dirham/ 1 kb . For example, Mobile Internet customers will be charged approximately QR 10 to browse around 160 WAP pages OR 40 WEB pages OR send 100 emails each containing up to 100 words.*

How do I obtain high speed Mobile Internet access?

Any customer with either a GPRS or 3G enabled mobile handset can access and use the Mobile Internet service. However customers who are located within Qtel's 3G coverage area and who possess a 3G handset will automatically default onto the higher network speeds enabled by Qtel's 3G network. Such customers will be able to access the Internet/WAP at a speed that is up to 8 times faster than that available over Qtel's GPRS network. Qtel's new 3G network covers the Greater Doha city area from Umm Salal in the north to Sealine beach in the south, and from Rayan in the west to the Corniche area in the East. In areas without 3G coverage, customers with 3G handsets will automatically default back on to Qtel's GSM/GPRS networks which cover more than 99% of the Qatar's populated areas.

Does 3G Mobile Internet access provide any other advantages?

Yes. Some 3G handsets in 3G coverage allow you to access the Mobile Internet and make voice calls at the same time! Customers accessing the Mobile Internet over the GPRS network will have to terminate their mobile internet session to make a voice call and their mobile internet session will automatically be terminated if they accept a voice call

What is Freedom?

Mobile Internet customers who click on the WEB icon in their handset will find a pre-installed bookmark called 'Freedom'. 'Freedom' is Qtel's WAP entertainment portal. By clicking on this bookmark, customers will be able to access a range of downloadable content such as ringtones, logos, backgrounds, wallpapers, java games and more. Please note that the 1 dirham per kb charge for Mobile Internet use is suspended when customers access and browse the Freedom Portal (access and navigate around the Freedom site is free of charge). Customers are simply charged for any content purchases they wish to make (i.e. QR 2 for the purchase of a ringtone).

What is the difference between this service and Qtel's 'Mobinet' service?

Both services allow you to use your mobile to browse the Internet/WAP at different speed (GPRS or 3G). While Mobinet service is available to post customers with a monthly subscription, Mobile Internet is available to all post paid and Hala prepaid customers. Mobinet exclusively offers access to secure/VPN and Intranet sites.

Price wise, what is the difference between Qtel's 'Mobinet' and 'Mobile Internet' services?

Qtel's Mobinet service involves a monthly subscription charge of QR 20 per month. In return customers receive a 'free' allowance of 2Mb with monthly usage exceeding this being charged at the rate of QR 10 per Mb. Qtel's Mobile Internet service on the other hand, involves no such monthly subscription charge with customers being charged 1 dirham per kb (which equates to approximately QR 10 per Mb) for the amount of data they consume.

What do I need to do to subscribe to Mobinet?

Firstly, you need to be a postpaid customer. Qtel's Mobinet service is currently not available to Hala customers. Secondly, you need to call 111 to activate the service. Thirdly, you need to have your handset specifically configured with Qtel's Mobinet service network access settings. (Please refer to the below questions for Mobinet and Mobile Internet settings)

I am a Mobinet customer but I would like to switch to your Mobile Internet service. How can I unsubscribe from Mobinet?

You can unsubscribe from Mobinet with immediate effect. Simply dial 111 from your handset and the customer care agent should be able to unsubscribe you from the service. Once the service is deactivated, you will be refunded in a pro rated basis according to the monthly billing date.
